Each spring, the Enfield Shakers produced hundreds of barrels of sap and thousands of pounds of maple sugar. Maple sugar was a popular flavoring in their diet. They also made maple candy for sale and for their own pleasure. The Enfield Shakers were particularly famous for their beautiful wooden sap buckets. Many are now part of the Museum’s historical collections.
“Sugaring off” describes the process of boiling down the sap to make the maple syrup and maple sugar. It also describes an informal social gathering in which guests help make the sugar.
Enfield Shaker Museum’s Great Stone Dwelling and Museum Store are open year-round. Guided tours of the Great Stone Dwelling are available daily. Winter hours are Monday through Saturday, 10am – 4pm and on Sunday, noon to 4 p.m.
The Museum is located on Route 4A, in the town of Enfield, between Andover and Lebanon. Free parking is available on the site.
